hellos and goodbyes

Parting is such sweet sorrow...and least for Ms. Sara and the children in the preschool classroom.

August was a month of goodbyes and hellos as we said goodbye to the summer campers and children starting kindergarten and first grade and hello to two children transitioning from the toddler class.

August 11th-August 15th
On Monday we combined baking soda, distilled white vinegar and liquid sidewalk chalk to create colored volcanoes for our last science experiment at Endeavor Learning Center with a child who starts first grade this week!. Even though the experiment fizzled (her dad said it was because the calcium carbonate in the chalk cancelled the acidity of the vinegar), we still enjoyed exploring and physically manipulating the results. All the photographs were taken by the child who taught the activity.

She and another child also worked together to construct a museum that showcased the various modes of transportation as well as selling automobiles.

On Tuesday a child who starts kindergarten this year (although she will be turning to the school for part of the day)  asked to go on a “nature walk” and led us to the pine trees where we enjoyed simply playing in the pine needles in addition to checking the structural integrity of the buildings and houses we had constructed earlier in the summer.

On Wednesday, we had a blast putting together the pieces of the marble track (specifically requested by a child whose birthday was this week -and who is starting first grade this week) and discovered that the silver ball “went down the track faster ‘cause it heavier”.

Another child xplored the new science equipment that the director had placed on the shelves and determined which set of objects was lighter-“the eggs”-and which was heavier-“the rocks”.

On Thursday, we were joined by two new colleagues- who will officially be joining our museum team on August 19th-who worked with us on several new scientific experiments.

We also took advantage of the beautiful late summer weather to explore the trails and fields behind the school and gather black-eyed Susans, Queen Anne’s lace and other flowers to bring to our families or to put in our classroom.

On Friday, we learned about the forces of motion as we pulled the “train” (complete with passengers) around the smaller playground, pushed the dump trucks across the grass and threw the ball over the house and the outdoor art easel. The infants-and Ms. Penny-participated in our “moving party” too!

One of the preschool children utilized her knowledge of architecture to plan and construct a city-complete with all the vehicles needed for the inhabitants to drive from place to place. She is also currently taking ideas and suggestions for its name!

Scientists still need a little rest and relaxation!
Inspired by one of our favorite books-Bedtime at the Swamp- we had lots of fun taking turns pretending to be alligators who were looking for meals or humans who had ventured into the swamp and were now trying to escape the hungry alligators.

We met with colleagues from other “museums” on Friday to discuss ideas and to plan future collaborative projects. We will keep the public updated on any future exhibitions and we appreciate your continued support!
